Major Nitric Acid Gas Plant

Problem

In a prominent nitric acid plant in Belgium, varnish deposits were observed on the bearings of a 5-stage Siemens compressor gearbox, resulting in a substantial reduction in the oil’s operational lifespan.

Solution

Boost VR+™ was introduced into the system pre-oil change, synergistically employed with the VITA ESP™ unit to proactively cleanse the system, removing the requirement for a flushing procedure. The subsequent utilization of Infinity™ Turbine Oil as the new oil charge aimed to mitigate deposits and sustain an optimal antioxidant level.

Results

Following the addition of Boost VR+ and integration of the VITA ESP II unit, deposit removal was achieved. Over the past 2 years of employing Infinity Turbine Oil, MPC levels have consistently maintained below 8, ensuring stable bearing temperatures without further temperature spikes. The anticipated extended lifespan of this oil surpasses that of previously used oils, mitigating the need for unplanned maintenance or shutdowns.
